Leadership is not something we do, it is something we be. To be a leader or not to be a leader, that is still the question for every person. It takes courage to be a person who gets everyone else stirred up about an issue or focused on accomplishing an action. The leader of a group quite often must refrain from jumping in to lend a hand because this often causes others to step back and let things be done for them. When this happens, people become entitled and think things are owed to them all of the time. On the other hand, the leader must have some skin in the game or else people will feel exploited and might well rebel either overtly or covertly against the leader. People who feel either exploited or entitled turn against leadership. Leadership is not just telling people what to do. It is inspiring them to rise above their limitations and achieve results that may initially seem impossible. In this way leaders make the impossible possible.
Everyone has within them this capability. This eSeminar Module is about learning how to bring that out from within even the most unassuming team member. Leadership is risky business because to be a leader on must step out on a limb and declare themselves. A delicate balance must always be maintained between exploitation and entitlement. This balance is called empowerment. This eCourse looks at the four sides of empowerment which are leadership on the one hand and managing, coaching and mentoring, on the other. People are empowered by a leader that can inspire them to take on challenges they might never be willing to face on their own. People are also empowered by a manager, coach and mentor who are dedicated to bringing out the brilliance from within each of the people they work with. There is nothing more generative that a leader who inspires others to take bold action and who also brings out people’s ability to take the actions.
